The thing is even if you look at it as a means to an end, AI code generators are pretty bad at the job. Well, they are good at generating code, but code is the liability that you have to put up with to get what you want. In general you want to minimize that liability and minimize code because its less that you have to maintain and understand. In that sense AI code generators are quite terrible at making useful or good code because they maximize liability.
Yeah the relationship to the thing really matters a lot. It also changes day-to-day. I have been messing around in Bevy for the last week and some parts of the architecture are really fun to learn about and figure out how to build systems that fit with the primitives they give you. Other aspects are infuriating and I just want someone to give me some code that I can copypasta.
The maximalists I know just say “it doesn’t need to be maintainable because the AI will just maintain it”. Which is sort of like the car thing. Cars enable traveling further, which enables sprawl, which necessitates a car. I was gonna say “I wouldn’t be surprised if in 1-2 years there were entire user-facing systems that were not written by humans and not maintainable by humans”, but given the rate at which I see people around me churning out shitty AI products, that’s probably already the case.
Also OP sorry for derailing this thread
“The AI situation is crazy”
