Hey everyone, my name is Jay. I am a solo-dev + pixel art enthusiast currently working on a turn-based narrative driven game. I enjoy turn-based roguelites but I really enjoy good writing and story in a game, which is what I am hoping to do as well. So glad to be here and hope to meet some fellow game devs! A game I’ve been enjoying recently and highly recommend is Titanium Court!
Hi Jay, nice to meet you! I also really like good writing and story in games c:
What do you like about Titanium Court?
Narrative-driven and pixel art and turn based? Very cool! I would definitely be excited to see what it ends up looking like. Hope things go as smoothly as they can
Ooh where to begin with Titanium Court. Firstly, it takes the really simple concept of match-3 and adds so much tactical and strategic depth to it. It felt refreshing compared to other match-3 games which are all about number-go-up, chasing high score mechanics. Titanium Court turns match-3 into tower defense and the way it’s implemented is really, really smart. Secondly, there is a tremendous amount of lore and world-building and narrative written into the game (a match-3 game!). The story is an onion I am still unpeeling about 6 hours into the game. And lastly, there’s so much whimsy and love put into the art and music that you know the dev poured their soul into the game. It feels like a breath of fresh air compared to all the number-go-up roguelites I’ve been playing or trying to build myself and reminded me of all the possible realities indie-games can occupy. Yes it can just be about cool mechanics, but also, have you considered how a match-3 game can also be a visual novel? So yeah, highly recommend.
Thank you! Hopefully I will share a prototype soon.
I have definitely played match-3 + VN games before, but the most interesting part is how tightly coupled the two aspects are. Do the tiles you choose to match-3 affect the VN part directly? It’s always cool when games do that, adds another layer of strategy!
Without giving too much away, yes the decisions you make within the match-3 affects what part of the story gets revealed, what dialogues get triggered etc.
