Hiya!!! I'm eri

So I’m going to split this into different sections because I tend to over-explain things. Feel free to skip to any point in the post.

Intro

I’m a hobbyist game dev from the UK. I’ve been programming for 7 years (as of making the post) and doing game dev from the very beginning. I use a variety of game engines, mainly: Unity, Love2D, Godot, and MonoGame. I am trying to learn Godot but it hasn’t been going very well.

What have I done in the past 7 years?

I started programming 7 years ago after a friend at the time asked me if I wanted to work on a game with them. The game was made in GB Studio (a game engine for making gameboy games) but never got finished.

After this, I started learning C# and made a few command-line games like “guess the random number” but never really made any progress with them.

At this point, I kinda stopped making games and spent a few years learning a variety of languages but returned to game dev through Unity making 2D games which were never released but were pretty fun to play. Throughout this I did make one called Balls, a maze game with the objective to find and push a ball to the end, but that has been lost to time.

Again, I stopped developing games until some point sixth-form where one of my course projects was to develop a 2D randomly generated platforming game where it needed to have proper planning and research mimicking what supposedly goes on inside game studios. This has been my main project for the past year and a half.

And I think that’s it for what I’ve done in my time developing games.

Current Projects:

  • Alchemy Garden which is a farming and crafting game inspired by Stardew Valley where the player can make potions, sell them, and discover new plants and recipes.
  • PlatformerGame (name in progress :P) a concept of a randomly generated platformer which is also the sixth-form project I mentioned earlier.
  • SpaceGame (also name in progress) which is a rogue-like where the goal is to escape a collapsing universe jumping from planet to planet finding fuel for your spaceship.

Off-topic

Here are a few (a lot) random facts about me:

  • I am a technical Minecrafter.
  • My most played steam game is Stardew Valley.
  • I’m going to university for a Computer Science degree.
  • I’m not very good at skilled games so mostly stick to casual/puzzle games.
  • I obsessively use :3 because I don’t know how to talk.
  • I don’t know how to program 3D games and I’m too scared to try.

Thanks for taking time to read my introduction

hi eri, welcome to the forum! if you have any questions about godot, feel free to ask in Help (or if it’s a subjective or non-specific question, in General). we’ve got quite a few godot users around who would be more than happy to help, myself included.

once you participate on the forum for a bit and get promoted to member by the system, you’ll also get 20GB of free space on the gitplace. please feel free to use that for your projects, if you wish.

Are your current projects in unity3d?

Nope! I used to use Unity but after the whole drama surrounding it I’ve been trying to learn other engines. I may have done one or two projects in unity3d but if I did I can’t remember them nor do I have the files for them.

What are you using for your current projects then?

It’s a mix of Godot and MonoGame. Although I may move my MonoGame projects to Godot since MonoGame isn’t too fun to work with without the proper tools and experience.

Welcome in! It is always nice to hear about how people get into game dev. SpaceGame sounds fun and I would love to give it a spin when ready.
