Serpent Songstress- From Stage to Studio

Hi! I’m Dinaari! The chiptune and video game music scene has been my home for 16 years, from Newgrounds to Youtube to Soundcloud to Bandcamp, to packed out venues at video game conventions. I’ve contributed to net labels such as Chiptunes=Win and Materia Collective in the past (though both now have associated drama). I’m proud to be a part of multiple chiptune projects that raise money for charitable causes, including my own Bandcamp fundraisers. Currently I’m a freelance game composer as well as a volunteer booking agent and event planner for MAGFest. I love getting to know talented people and working with them on a personal level!

I’ve got a multimedia background from being a cartoonist, running webcomics from 2012-2018. I’m currently dipping my toe more in the game development side with a PICO-8 space scavenger hunt game called JAR FIELD i made for NovaLiminal’s game jam.

I love the indie development community and especially the streamers on Twitch (and in this forum) who make things welcoming and accessible for everyone. I’m on my third indie project, providing horror music and ambience for Choto (who advised me to be confident in this post lol) on his retro FPS game De Miedo. I’ve also been a guest arranger for Squire Games, working on a team of JRPG composers and contemporary chiptune artists.

Well, I’ve been rambling on enough. I’ll post things that I’ve worked on in the coming days. Love you all!

I can confirm that Dinny’s music is really good!!! I listen to Dragonroll Palace way more than I should (I am weird about my ‘liked tracks’ on soundcloud) and it’s incredible. If you like the solo in Plok Beach (or even just know what it is), Dinaari is for you

Hi Dinny!!! It’s so nice to have you. I’m looking forward to seeing updates about JAR FIELD in Show Off.

I remember having a listening party for The Last Number on my stream, it was a lot of fun

very good ear!
Tim Follin is a big inspiration for how I make chiptunes. Dragonroll Palace was for a contest where only 20% of entries got accepted, so I had to pull out all of the stops. I panicked at the last minute when I was trying to make final tweaks and accidentally sent in the wrong mix >_<
It made it in anyway but I was so embarrassed that I immediately made the soundcloud/bandcamp mix right after. Famitracker only exports in mono, and emulates the hardware mix that the Famicom would do, so its hard to know how itll sound once you export each track individually and recombine. It uses the Ricoh 2A03, Namco N-163, and FDS chips concurrently. I think a real Famicom might blow up though

Tysm and thanks for helping inspire me to make games! :green_heart:I love hanging out on your streams.
Having an actual listening party for my music was so bonkers, I would have never imagined having something like that happen when I first started writing the album.

I would love to hear what you think about FamiStudio, if you’ve used it. I’ve had some interest in trying it, but I don’t really know anything about chiptune/retro music.

I’ve been meaning to give it a try. A lot of newer chiptune artists have been using it, as it’s easier to get a grasp of than the music tracker workflow.
It’s basically a DAW that makes hardware accurate NES chiptune.
Actually, I think Yukie uses it sometimes now that I think about it.
Because of its ease of use I was thinking of running a demonstration of it at the next MAGFest, I just have to find someone who’s mastered the program and is good at communicating concepts to people trying to get into making retro music. Last year, I was able to bring in a trans Famitracker composer who had a masters in music composition and she was able to explain things so succinctly that even advanced tracker users learned new tricks.
While I like using trackers, most people probably will find it like trying to write with your non-dominant hand or reading left to right. In that way, I welcome new approaches to making authentic chiptune so I could definitely recommend checking Famistudio out.
